Funny News: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (PS3)

July 24, 2007: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (PS3)

...In terms of mechanics, the game plays like X-Men Legends, only from a third-person rather than top down perspective. In other words, the game looks good and seems like it SHOULD be fun (again, how hard is it?), but it feels like you've done this before and with a better game to boot. You control one of the Fantastic Four (for those of you who don't know, choosing between Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Girl, The Thing, or The Human Torch) at a time and can switch back and forth between characters on the fly.

...The Wii version is similar on most fronts, except it's played from a more top down perspective (making it look a lot like the X-Men legends games) with (obviously) inferior graphics to the Xbox 360 and PS3. They try to make up for this by using the motion control system, which creates the interesting paradox of a motion control button masher! Just keep waggling. Really, with the Wii controller and nunchuck the game becomes even more tedious...

A History of Racing Video Games FunnyGames, June 12, 2006
It all begins with Pole Position. It was 1982 and, along with Mr. And Mrs. Pac Man and the Space Invaders, this seminal arcade racer was a major player in the early days of the video arcade. There were other racing games before it, but Pole Position looked and played like nothing else. The graphics were the clincher. There wasn't much to work with back then, but the Indy cars resembled actual automobiles, and the Fuji racetrack featured billboards, grass fields and majestic mountains rising up from the horizon...oh, and other cars, which weren't a given in early racing games. It was this attempt at realism that made Pole Position one of the biggest cash cows, or should we say "coin cows" (HAR!) of the early video arcades.

Namco, the game's creators released Pole Position in Japan first and distributed it throughout arcades across the globe, but Atari had the rights to the phenom in the States. The biggest difference between the International version of the game and the U.S. counterpart is the "Prepare to qualify" computer...

Wolfenstein Preview FunnyGames, August 4, 2008
Wolfenstein is being created for simultaneous release on the PC, PS3, and 360 - previously, id as well as other PC-centric developers have moved away from their home platform and towards consoles, citing piracy as well as difficulty with sales overall as the reason. Some thought that meant that id was abandoning the PC altogether or intended on tossing together a sloppy console-like port as an afterthought, but if Wolfenstein is the standard that they're setting for themselves, I don't think we have much to worry about. id's own Kevin Cloud said that his home platform is still the PC and his playtesting sessions with this game take place on PC. For the demo I saw it on the 360, but Raven's Eric Biessman said that they could have brought the PC version too except that they didn't feel like bringing a gaming-based desktop PC with them on the plane, and that the 360 is more portable in that regard.

pressed on, though, and asked about the game engine - it's based originally on the Quake 4 engine but in the four years since that was released, Raven's changed the engine enough for Wolfenstein that it's pretty much separate technology by now. I also expressed doubts about what kind of a PC release we'd get when consoles have to be...>>
