Funny News: Monster Hunter Freedom Review

June 12, 2006: Monster Hunter Freedom Review

Monster Hunter Freedom is a pretty straight port of a Japanese-only PS2 game that came out about a year ago. The basic idea is that you're an up-and-coming warrior looking to cut your teeth on some simple quests. Eventually you'll gain notoriety, going on more advanced adventures, collecting cool new gear and doing some serious hacking and slashing...

...The PSP is a handheld and as such it should play host to games which are quick and easy to pick up and have fun with. Monster Hunter Freedom is simply a case of a poorly chosen port that probably should've stayed on the PS2...and in Japan, for that matter...

Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins is a definite ode to the old school series and to classic arcade games in general. It may not be the most innovative game on the PSP, and it's not without its faults, but old school gamers and action fanatics will find a lot to enjoy here.

...In all, Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins is a great buy for folks that loved the original games, as it adds enough to keep things fresh. Recently christened gamers might find the old school mechanics too frustrating and should think about checking out the originals before dropping down 40 bucks on the latest version.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest FunnyGames, July 18, 2006

The story in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is fairly faithful to its cinematic counterpart, focusing almost exclusively on the bits featuring Captain Jack Sparrow, since that's the character you'll be playing as over the course of the game. The game starts with a little explanation for what Jack was doing in that coffin at the start of the film, and on the whole the story is mostly faithful, though it tweaks a few minor exchanges for the sake of streamlining the game's storytelling and ...

Good: Rousing Hans Zimmer score; multiplayer naval battles surprisingly fun gaming.
Bad: Swordplay is shallow and repetitive; game controls are too imprecise for platforming sections; endgame structure can make for tedious backtracking.
