Now that many real-money online poker sites are starting to close due to federal legislation, many gamers are deciding whether they're in it for the money, or for the thrill of poker itself. The most popular form of poker nowadays is Texas Hold 'Em, and video games and TV shows basedon it are everywhere. And the Xbox 360 can be put on the list of platforms with a Hold 'Em game - Tikgames' Texas Hold 'Em for the Live Arcade has just launched on Microsoft's powerhouse console, and while you'll find the graphics to be anything but impressive, the online play is better. But how much better?...

Sure, the chat system over your headset works for all players at all times, but you're still missing one of three main tools a poker player needs to win: the math, the betting habits of his opponents, and the "tells" those opponents give. I played a lot of poker in high school. That was back in the mid-1970s. Poker for high school students wasn't like it is today. There was no Internet, no televised poker tournaments, and surely no legal poker rooms in New York where I grew up. For high school kids especially, poker was strictly an underground game illegal, forbidden, and compelling. For us it was like smoking cigarettes or drinking beer or smoking pot or getting laid. You wanted to do it because it was forbidden. And it was fun.

A favorite variety of the game back then was guts. We generally played it in the senior room of the high school a private room set aside only for seniors where we got away with playing poker because faculty didn't enter (unless they smelled cigarettes or pot). Small fortunes changed hands over this game. And we were all on very short bankrolls.

Wolfenstein is being created for simultaneous release on the PC, PS3, and 360 - previously, id as well as other PC-centric developers have moved away from their home platform and towards consoles, citing piracy as well as difficulty with sales overall as the reason. Some thought that meant that id was abandoning the PC altogether or intended on tossing together a sloppy console-like port as an afterthought, but if Wolfenstein is the standard that they're setting for themselves, I don't think we have much to worry about. id's own Kevin Cloud said that his home platform is still the PC and his playtesting sessions with this game take place on PC. For the demo I saw it on the 360, but Raven's Eric Biessman said that they could have brought the PC version too except that they didn't feel like bringing a gaming-based desktop PC with them on the plane, and that the 360 is more portable in that regard.
