Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords is a sequel to Stardock's hit turn-based strategy game that is set in the 23rd century. The player takes on the role of leader of a space faring civilization and must guide their race into the galaxy using traditional "4X" gameplay style of exploring the universe, expanding your empire, exploiting your rivals, and exterminating your enemies. Playing as either one of the ten predefined races or by creating your own, your goal is to become the supreme ruler of the entire galaxy.

Right from the opening screens you're presented with the ability to create the gaming experience that you prefer. You'll have options to start a new custom sandbox-type mode, take on the story behind Galactic Civilization II: Dread Lords in the campaign mode, or...

Many gamers are going to buy Eden Studios' Alone in the Dark and instantly take a liking to the game's all together different approach. The episodic format, the highly stylized cinematic set pieces, the HUD-free presentation, the first/third person gameplay, the 1:1 analog controls for two-handed weapons... there's a lot of forward-thinking stuff to latch on to. However, no matter how enthusiastic the gamer, all will eventually be given pause. Maybe it's a car getting inexplicably lodged in some invisible part of the environment. Maybe it's a needless death because the camera didn't catch up to the action quickly enough. Maybe, just maybe, the game will even crash and take with it any progress you've made in an episode. ...In terms of mechanics, the game plays like X-Men Legends, only from a third-person rather than top down perspective. In other words, the game looks good and seems like it SHOULD be fun (again, how hard is it?), but it feels like you've done this before and with a better game to boot. You control one of the Fantastic Four (for those of you who don't know, choosing between Mr. Fantastic, The Invisible Girl, The Thing, or The Human Torch) at a time and can switch back and forth between characters on the fly.

...The Wii version is similar on most fronts, except it's played from a more top down perspective (making it look a lot like the X-Men legends games) with (obviously) inferior graphics to the Xbox 360 and PS3. They try to make up for this by using the motion control system, which creates the interesting paradox of a motion control button masher! Just keep waggling. Really, with the Wii controller and nunchuck the game becomes even more tedious...
