Japan game charts July
Despite its title, New Super Mario Bros. was a return to Nintendo's roots, a throwback to the 2D side-scrolling fare of the classic Mario titles. New Super Mario Bros. also proved a return to popular form this week in Japan, where it reclaimed the No. 1 spot atop the country's top-selling games for the week of June 26 to July 2, according to data from Media Create.
The charts, which spell out the best-selling games of the week, reflected Japanese gamers' strong affection for the Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation 2. Newcomer Boku no Natsuyasumi Portable for the PSP was the lone anomaly in the top 10, at No. 8.
Meanwhile, Square-Enix's role-player Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, which held the top spot in last week's charts, fell three spots to fourth. A new entry on the PlayStation 2, Super Dragon Ball Z, took second...

But we finally saw a crack in the, well, crack when the series shifted to the PSP in the original Liberty City Stories. With gameplay stuck somewhere between GTA III and Vice City, it was the first game that didn't do anything new, instead offering a nice, safe tour through a familiar locale. We marveled at the technological effort and excused the lack of innovation since, hot damn, this was a full-fledged GTA running on a little PSP...

Monster Hunter Freedom Review FunnyGames, June 12, 2006Monster Hunter Freedom is a pretty straight port of a Japanese-only PS2 game that came out about a year ago. The basic idea is that you're an up-and-coming warrior looking to cut your teeth on some simple quests. Eventually you'll gain notoriety, going on more advanced adventures, collecting cool new gear and doing some serious hacking and slashing...
...The PSP is a handheld and as such it should play host to games which are quick and easy to pick up and have fun with. Monster Hunter Freedom is simply a case of a poorly chosen port that probably should've stayed on the PS2...and in Japan, for that matter...
