Many gamers are going to buy Eden Studios' Alone in the Dark and instantly take a liking to the game's all together different approach. The episodic format, the highly stylized cinematic set pieces, the HUD-free presentation, the first/third person gameplay, the 1:1 analog controls for two-handed weapons... there's a lot of forward-thinking stuff to latch on to. However, no matter how enthusiastic the gamer, all will eventually be given pause. Maybe it's a car getting inexplicably lodged in some invisible part of the environment. Maybe it's a needless death because the camera didn't catch up to the action quickly enough. Maybe, just maybe, the game will even crash and take with it any progress you've made in an episode. Ridge Racer 7 Game FunnyGames, September 5, 2006
Although no official launch date has been set, odds are that Bandai Namco Game's next Ridge Racer title will be one of the PlayStation 3's launch titles. The game reunites the team of director Masaya Kobayashi and associate producer Hideo Teramoto that gave us Ridge Racers for the PSP and Ridge Racer 6 on the Xbox 360. The September 15 issue of Weekly Famitsu provided a few details on some of the new modes of play that will be found in the Ridge Racer 7.

The meat of the game in the single-player experience will be the sprawling Ridge State Grand Prix. Set in the fictional nation of Ridge State, the player will begin as an unknown racer, but will gradually earn fame, new machines, and customization parts by winning races and building ties with manufacturers. The mode will have 44 courses, including mirror courses, and will span roughly 160 individual races.

...The game controls are essentially the same as what we've seen since Spider-Man 2. You'll swing through the city on web ropes which are shot and swung from by pressing and holding the R trigger (R2 on the PS3). Releasing the button causes Spidey to let go; press it again while in mid-air and you get another web rope and another swing. It's a very simple mechanic that's worked amazingly well in the past and continues to do so in this game...

...Much like the last game, you'll advance the story by traveling through the city to event markers, each of which is connected to one of the game's many missions. The narrative is far more open-ended this time around, with plenty of Spidey villains not featured in the films (though the geriatric Vulture doesn't show his liver-spotted head for once) and three gangs tearing the city apart, each having its own territories and mission line...
