August 14, 2006: Dead Rising ReviewWe finally got one. Finally. Yes, there is now a zombie video game in the stores that lives up to the classic zombie horror flicks. The developers at Capcom insist via a disclaimer on the front of Dead Rising's box that no, legendary horror filmmaker George A. Romero was not a part of this project, nor does this title have anything official to do with his seminal zombie movie Dawn of the Dead. Why even bother? Well, there are some very conspicuous similarities here: zombies in a mall, people getting eaten, that sort of thing. But if this game needs a disclaimer, then don't World of Warcraft developers Blizzard Entertainment need one disclaiming any perceived similarity to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings? Or what about the hundreds of books, shows, movies, and games that borrow from popular culture? ...

We're really going to try our best not to blame The Rock for the human travesty that was DOOM: The Movie. I mean, they didn't let him be the super cool, one-liner spitting badass we know and love, instead relegating him to a ridiculously cliched soldier who goes too far. But despite that misstep, we still love the big lug, and have hope that he may be able to bring a little respect to videogame movies when Spy Hunter comes out in 2007.
Beating the flick to the punch, however, Midway is hard at work on Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run, a PS2 and Xbox title set to hit stores this summer. Thankfully, even though the game will beat out the movie by a year, it'll still feature the voice, likeness and undeniable presence ...

...Sonic Rivals 2 isn't your traditional Sonic game; it's a sort of 2D racing game. The controls are like a high-speed platformer, and the level designs are very much Sonic-style, complete with loops, multiple paths, and speed boosts. But Sonic Rivals 2 just doesn't work as a dynamic racing game. Everyone runs at the same speed, so the only way to gain on the opposition is to use power-ups or take alternate paths. But power-ups are neither entertaining nor very effective (Mario Kart, this ain't), and there aren't that many alternate paths to take...
...There are moments where racing at high speeds and flying through the air might sound exciting, but even these moments are dull. You move fast, but not blistering speed fast. And did I mention that you always race against exactly one opponent? Be still my beating heart...
