A History of Racing Video Games
It all begins with Pole Position. It was 1982 and, along with Mr. And Mrs. Pac Man and the Space Invaders, this seminal arcade racer was a major player in the early days of the video arcade. There were other racing games before it, but Pole Position looked and played like nothing else. The graphics were the clincher. There wasn't much to work with back then, but the Indy cars resembled actual automobiles, and the Fuji racetrack featured billboards, grass fields and majestic mountains rising up from the horizon...oh, and other cars, which weren't a given in early racing games. It was this attempt at realism that made Pole Position one of the biggest cash cows, or should we say "coin cows" (HAR!) of the early video arcades.
Namco, the game's creators released Pole Position in Japan first and distributed it throughout arcades across the globe, but Atari had the rights to the phenom in the States. The biggest difference between the International version of the game and the U.S. counterpart is the "Prepare to qualify" computer...

Indiana Jones preview FunnyGames, June 6, 2006Lucky us. We caught a glimpse of Lucasarts' next-gen Indiana Jones game. The plot is still a mystery, heck the game isn't scheduled to be released even remotely soon, but we did witness a super cool tech demo at E3 to whet our appetites.
As we've reported before, the game utilizes the Euphoria engine...which promises to advance video game character animations into realms we previously could only dream about.
In the demo we watched, Indy was standing on a cable car that was racing downhill through San Francisco's old-time Chinatown. Villains were coming from everywhere, from inside the cable car and also jumping onto the roof from other cars...

QuakeCon 2008: The Story of Rage FunnyGames, August 4, 2008At QuakeCon 2008, we got our first details on the story behind id's upcoming first-person action game. Id also showed off an extended version of the Rage trailer that debuted at E3 earlier this month that put a larger emphasis on driving and racing. ...As seen in the many id Tech 5 demos and recent Rage trailers, driving will play a very large part in Rage. Over the course of the game, you'll accumulate several different vehicles that can be customized to your liking. In the latest trailer, we saw dune buggies racing on a desert track, armed with mounted Gatling guns and machine guns. Willits said these vehicles will become an extension of the player, so expect plenty of options for customization...>>
